Water drawn from a natural source is poured into the filter's upper chamber and gravity pulls it through a filtration element into the lower chamber, removing a wide range of contaminants, including bacteria, protozoa, and some viruses. Their large capacity and ease of use make them useful for purifying bulk water volumes while you attend to other survival tasks.

**6. Distillation: Creating Pure Water**

When water is suspect or laden with chemicals like heavy metals or salts, distillation is one of the few methods that can reliably render it safe. This process involves heating water to produce steam and then condensing it to collect purified water. While energy-intensive, distillation is invaluable for treating contaminated water sources and ensuring that even the most compromised water is made drinkable.
